10 Fun Things To Do In San Antonio: November 2018 Edition

As a city of well over a million people (and growing!), San Antonio is constantly buzzing with activity. From new local businesses to colorful festivals and live music events, it seems there’s always “something to do” in the Alamo City.

But how do you choose the right ones to put on your calendar? That’s where we come in! As a group of San Antonio experts, we’ve curated a list of events worth checking out in the San Antonio area. Take time to read and explore all of the many options for November!

1. Celebrate the Mariachi Extravaganza

The 24th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza is taking the stage for an entire week at the Lila Cockrell Theatre this month! This annual event celebrates the history and cultural impact of the traditional mariachi style of music with various competitions and performances, as well as mariachi and vocal workshops! See the event schedule and grab your tickets here.

2. See the San Antonio Zoo Lights

For an exotic take on Christmas decor, head to the San Antonio zoo! A favorite local tradition, the San Antonio Zoo Lights is an immersive experience that features thousands of twinkling lights, iconic visuals, entertainment, music, and hands-on displays. Sip hot cocoa, roast s’mores, head to the ice skating rink, and try a camel ride. The fun starts on November 17th!

3. Geek Out with Napoleon Dynamite

The mid-2000s was a time where you could hardly go a day without something quoting a line from Napoleon Dynamite (Right, Tina?!). This month, the Tobin Center is hosting a screening and moderated discussion with Jon Heder (Napoleon), Efren Ramirez (Pedro), and Tina Majorino (Deb)! Relive your younger years doing strange dances and embracing the weird that this movie evokes.

When: November 15, 8:00 PM

4. Kick Off “Light the Way”

With almost a million festive lights adorning the University of the Incarnate Word, Light The Way is one of San Antonio’s most iconic Christmas events. Starting on November 17th (and on into January), you can stroll the grounds of the University starting at 6:30 PM to enjoy the spectacle. The kickoff celebration will (November 17th) will feature a holiday shop, Kid’s Corner, and food trucks!

When: November 17th, 3:00 – 9:30 PM

5. Get Woke at TEDxSanAntonio

Get informed and involved in the intellectual community this month by attending the TEDxSanAntonio event! This evening of inspiration features TED-style talks from local leaders and global experts and is designed to create engaging conversation within the community. Grab your seats here.

When: November 3, 1:00 PM

6. Celebrate Diwali

The Diwali San Antonio “Festival of Lights” is a celebration of vibrant Indian culture and traditions, including dancing, food, entertainment, and the marketplace. In India, the Diwali celebration is akin to New Year’s Eve, so the evening will also include a fireworks display.

When: November 3, 5:00 PM

Where: Hemisfair, 434 S Alamo St

7. Watch a Holiday Performance

The play’s the thing! This year, celebrate the holidays with a performance. The Nutcracker (by Ballet San Antonio) will be at the Tobin Center from November 23rd to December 2nd, and Mr. Popper’s Penguins at The Magik Theatre will run November 20th to December 23rd.

8. Wander through A Corn Maze

Autumn hasn’t truly been fulfilled until you’ve gotten lost in a corn maze! This year, Trader’s Village will host a festive weekend corn maze that features a petting zoo, pumpkin patch, corn dishes, and entertainment for the whole family. Tickets are available here.

When: Any Weekend in November (Sat 11:00 AM-8:00 PM, Sun 11:00 AM-5:00 PM)

9. Enjoy The River Parade

As the month winds down, everyone is getting ready for the Christmas season, and the Ford Holiday River Parade & Lighting Festival is a perfect way to get in the spirit! This event features Christmas music, the Riverwalk Lighting Ceremony, and (of course) the parade. Don’t miss out on this San Antonio tradition.

10. Browse a Holiday Market

Looking to get your holiday shopping done early? Join the 40th Annual San Antonio Christmas Showcase on November 17th and 18th! Taking place at the Freeman Coliseum, the Showcase is Central Texas’ largest Christmas gifts show, featuring over 500 booths full of everything from decorations to handmade gifts to apparel and outdoor art!

When: November 17-18, 10:00 AM-5:00 PM
